Guidelines
for artists
Artists and designers will need to respond to commissions in slightly
different ways.
An artist will be given a commission on the basis of their ethical position
and visual accomplishment in the medium in which they specialise.
Once the commission has been agreed upon and the artist selected, he or
she is expected to produce an outcome from within their world. Never-the-less
there should be information going to the commissioner about the proposed
outcome at reasonable stages through the process.
There are technical issues, for example, infection control and decency
that are particular to the world of health and healthcare professionals.
It is important that these are observed, otherwise the final artwork will
be rejected.
Having said that, it is equally important that the artist observes the
integrity of their own process and isn’t told what to do by the
commissioner.
It must be accepted that in agreeing to undertake a commission of this
sort, that these negotiated agreements must be sought. In the event of
deadlock then the artist may make representations to the whole arts steering
committee.
The commission never-the-less is a contract and once placed can not be
withdrawn.
The artist must bring in the commission within the budget as these are
normally rigidly fixed and thus inflexible.
