Longreach
House is situated to the left of the larger Camborne / Redruth Community
Hospital.Set back, it was sited to overlook the panoramic view.
The entrance though was by a gable end and side of two wings. To the
right hand side is the very unattractive old hospital.
Partly to avoid the criticism that a mental health unit should be stuck
around the back out of the way, and partly to identify the site from
the main vehicle approach, it was decided that the building should be
decorated with a series of porcelain tile panels.
These were designed to integrate within the walls, by emphasising diagonal
rythmns and overlaid pattern to avoid a formal patterned layout, curved
tiles stick out, producing sharp, dark shadows which change depending
on the time of day and weather.
The colours resinate with the building and its surroundings, producing
an unusual and soft integration of the building, the surrounding landscape
and the prevailing atmospheric mood that is so important to this part
of Cornwall.
