Dragon Jar
1980
Two of a series of dragon vases and jars which also included one with a turtle knob.
Based on a Mason's iron-stone jar. These jars give some indication of the naivity of the English interpretation of the original Chinese jars. The difference of colour values and decoration tended to be less subtle, more grandeur and exaggerated than the original items.
These models have been saved from the florid and ornate sense of nineteenth century English taste values and illustrate the large, decorative pots ability to project a sense of solidity and innate modesty.
