'Silk' showrunner Tom Spezialy signs global deal with Amazon Studios

The first Marvel Live Series from Sony Picture Television, Silk, found his showrunner. According to Deadline, Tom Spezialy (executive producer, Watchmen) will act as showrunner on Silk as part of its overall deal with Amazon, which will be Silk’s streaming home upon release.

Spezialy will partner with Lauren Moon (writer, Atypical) who wrote the Silk TV adaptation based on the comic book of the same name. According to Deadline, Silk, also known as Cindy Moon, is a Korean-American superhero who exists in the Spider-Man universe.

Used to comic book adaptations on television, Spezialy recently worked on HBO. Watchmen series as executive producer. His involvement in the series earned the show an Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series, via Deadline.

In addition to Spezialy and Moon, the producers of Silk include Phil Lord (producer, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse) and Chris Miller (producer, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse), who both oversee the Sony TV series based on their Marvel properties. According to Deadline, Amy Pascal (producer, Spider-Man: Far From Home) will also serve as a producer on the series.

The character of Silk was born in 2014 in The Incredible Spider-Man # 1 like a faceless cameo. According to Deadline, Silk is played by Tiffany Espensen (Monsterville by RL Stine: Cabinet of Souls) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She first appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. It is currently unclear whether Espensen will reprise his role in the Amazon series or whether the character will be recast.

Manufacturing on the Silk The TV series is scheduled to begin in August 2021.
